How to Locate & Shut Off Your Main Water Valve in a Plumbing Emergency

1. Where to Find Your Main Water Shutoff Valve

Depending on your home's construction type and climate region, main shutoff valves are typically located in one of these four positions:

• Basements & Crawl Spaces: Located on the interior wall closest to the front street side of the house, approximately 1 to 3 feet above floor level.
• Slab Homes & Utility Rooms: Located near your hot water heater, inside an attached garage, or behind an access panel near the main front hose bib.
• Outside Meter Box (Curb Stop): Located near the property boundary street line inside a heavy cast-iron or plastic ground box labeled "WATER METER".
• Commercial Properties: Located in the main mechanical room or water riser closet.

2. Types of Shutoff Valves & How to Turn Them

• Ball Valves (Lever Handle): Turn the straight lever handle 90 degrees so it is perpendicular to the pipe. This completely stops water flow.
• Gate Valves (Round Wheel Handle): Rotate the wheel clockwise ("Righty-Tighty") until it reaches a firm stop. Do not over-torque past resistance.
